| BENICIA - Though less than two years
old, CBG Industries, a sheet metal fabricator that focuses on lighting
fixture components and specialized lighting fixtures, has already more
than tripled in size. In the past 18 months, the company, which started
in the garage of Barry and Carla Gould, has expanded its space requirements
three times. In its most recent move, with the assistance of Larry
Hazard of CRS, CBG doubled its 3,000sf space at 685 Stone Road in Benicia
to 6,000sf.
The expansion is a result of the company's booming business and the anticipation of a new product line it intends to launch this year. "My wife got an idea one weekend for a new line of lighting products," explains Mr. Gould. "It's a unique idea, a handicraft type of lighting fixture geared to a certain market niche. We have received very good response on the mock-ups. People who have seen the drawings and renderings are very excited. I feel confident it is going to take off." Cautious about prospects CBG is currently a family affair, with the staff consisting of Mr. Gould, who does set up and fabrication the evening after his full-time day job; |
Ms. Gould, who runs CBG during the day; Ms. Gould's son;
and a couple of part-time employees. After the new product line is
launched, Mr. Gould anticipates adding more staff.
CBG is fortunate in that it has a unique and special relationship with one of its customers, notes Mr. Gould. "We were able to take over one of their specialized product lines," he says. "Our service and skills have been instrumental in their growth and allowed them to expand and concentrate in other areas." However, Mr. Gould is cautious about the prospects of the company. "I'm pretty conservative," he says. "We're looking to work off debt and acquire new equipment. I'm looking at sales of $300,000-$400,000. It's all we can handle right now. I'm just trying to keep it comfortable. It's a learning curve right now for my wife, her son, and the employees we have brought in." Though conservative about CBG's prospects, Mr. Gould believes that the 6,000sf of space the company occupies ultimately will not be enough. For further information, call 707-751-1526. |
