Metropolitan Van plans to build new 92,000 sf facility in Benicia

BENICIA - Believing that the cost of leasing space is getting too high, Dennis Paulley, president and co-owner of Metropolitan Van & Storage, has decided to give up the 76,000 sf at 537 Stone Road and the 48,000 sf on Bayshore Road the company now occupies in Benicia. Instead, he is building his own facility on 4.38 acres the company purchased at 5400 Industrial Way in Benicia Industrial Park.

Construction of the new 92,400 sf warehouse and office should begin in mid-June or early July. Currently, Metropolitan is going through the design, soil testing, and site-work process. Tulloch Construction of Oakland is the contractor.

Smaller, but better configured

Preliminary plans indicate a 3,000sf office with the remainder in 30-foot-clear-height warehouse.

Although the new facility will be only 70% the size of the old ones, Mr. Paulley says the taller height  

and better configuration will actually allow his company to do more business.

The new facility will be much nicer for our increased storage business," he explains. "We are doing a lot of different types of storage. We do a good deal of government storage as well as equipment storage."

A full service moving company and an agent for Atlas Van Lines, Metropolitan Van & Storage has operated in Benicia since 1968. The company usually employs 25-30 people but doubles its work force during the summer months, when more relocations occur. Mr. Paulley expects to add even more employees once the new building is complete.

In other news, Mr. Paulley and his partner, Keith Estes, sold a 10,000 sf building they owned at 115 West Channel Road to Spectrum Heat Treating. Larry Hazard of CRS represented Metropolitan in both transactions.
